The Saudi Railways Company (SAR) will unveil a groundbreaking localization program during the inaugural Saudi International Railways Conference in Riyadh on November 20-21, under the patronage of Minister of Transport and Logistics and SAR Chairman Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser.
The conference aims to spotlight the latest innovations and developments in the global and local railway sectors.
Dr. Bashar Al-Malik, CEO of SAR, announced that the program will focus on advancing Saudi Arabia’s railway industry by fostering local partnerships, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and encouraging private sector participation.
The initiative aligns with the goals of Vision 2030, aiming to establish factories within the Kingdom, localize services, and transfer expertise from leading international railway companies.
Al-Malik highlighted SAR’s recent achievements, including surpassing a 50% local spending rate in 2023, with aspirations to increase it to 60% by 2025. He noted that these efforts have created over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, achieving a job localization rate of 88%.
Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of sustainable rail solutions, introducing the Haramain High-Speed Train, the region’s first fast electric train with zero carbon emissions.
SAR has also conducted hydrogen train trials, a first in the Middle East and Africa, as part of its commitment to the Saudi Green Initiative.
These advancements contribute to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing traffic safety, and protecting road infrastructure by decreasing heavy vehicle usage.
Dr. Al-Malik emphasized the strategic importance of railways in global logistics. He highlighted their role in ensuring smooth trade flow, particularly amid geopolitical challenges.
The railway network, linking key ports in Dammam and Jubail to Riyadh’s dry port, has enabled the efficient transportation of goods redirected to the Red Sea ports.
The conference will also introduce two major projects central to Vision 2030: the Land Bridge and the Gulf Linkage Project, designed to position Saudi Arabia as a global logistics hub connecting three continents.
This initiative is part of SAR’s broader mission to enhance the Kingdom’s role in international logistics, attract cutting-edge rail technologies, and support the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics.
The conference is expected to attract global stakeholders, offering significant investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia’s evolving railway sector.
